Janica is a Noida-based open-style/hip-hop dancer with years of experience performing and competing on various stages across India. Her journey as a dancer began as a little kid born amid the hills of the north-east, a mainlander by ethnicity but culturally having been brought up with the people of the hills. Whenever Janica felt like an outsider, her dance spoke to those around her — more than just a hobby, being a dancer was her identity, one she was accepted for despite the language barriers and cultural differences between her and those around her.
In her early years as a young dancer, she uploaded K-pop and other choreographies by popular artists such as Matt Steffanina and Lia Kim on YouTube. As she kept learning and exploring various genres of music, she found Afrobeats and was intrigued to add Afro to her dance vocabulary. She has competed at various IIT-level dance competitions and has also been a participant at underground dance battles in the Delhi NCR region under the stage name DC.
A timid and laid-back person by nature, she tends to merge with the general crowd and finds comfort in going unnoticed till the music comes on and it's time to perform. The stage, to her, is an escape where she's allowed to speak the language that comes most naturally to her — the only time she feels most confident is on the stage.
As the music comes on and the moves take over her, she merges with the beat; she comes alive. On stage is where the real her is in the spotlight, burning bright to be seen. She struggled to find a sense of belonging at multiple stages in her life, but as a dancer living for the movements and music, on stage is always where she belonged.
